Listen as Pastor Jesse explains the difference between Complacency vs. Dependency as it relates to the mission on the Eastside. One of the greatest threats to the success of our campus is complacency. Webster’s defines complacency as “self satisfaction especially when accompanied by unawareness of actual dangers or deficiencies”. The danger that we face on the Eastside is thinking that the campus is going to flourish on it’s own because we are Mars Hill. It’s dangerously possible that the success of the air war and results in a lazy ground war. This a beckoning call to put your hands to the plow for the mission of the gospel on the Eastside and it starts with a conscious awareness of our dependency on none other than Jesus.

A Christian’s life is founded on Jesus, but as we see in the life of the apostle Paul – and his admonition to the church – the Christian life is marked by steadfast, missional prayer, something often neglected in both pragmatic and biblically reformed lives. Pastor James explores wrong views of prayer, the importance of prayer, and how to pray as seen in not only Paul but Jesus himself.

There are many ways to live your life, many “missions” to take part in (e.g. the mission of success, mission of marriage, mission of fame, mission of morality, mission of comfort, etc) that ultimately lead to dead ends and cul-de-sacs. However, Scripture invites us to go deeper and join the life-giving mission of God right here in the city of Seattle as missionaries following Jesus (cf. John 17:18). This week we examine the life and ministry of the apostle Paul during his time in Athens in Acts 17:16-34 and pull out practical observations for missional living today.

Some Christians soak up culture that conflicts with their faith without discernment; others stick their head in the sand and seek to escape the culture around them altogether. What is a biblical response to engaging our culture, being missional without being misled? Pastor James Harleman explores the foundation, corruption and redemption of culture, challenging preconceptions about what a “good Christian” should or should not engage and how pious religiosity can inhibit the gospel.

Jude wanted to write about the great salvation we have in Jesus – but he is compelled to call his audience to a “smack down” because of “grace perverts”. People perverting grace into sin and denial of Jesus as King, Jude calls them out and calls us up to contending for the faith.

What does it look like to contend for the faith? Who is the one that contends? Jude exhorts believers in Jesus to be contenders for the faith, not simply over doctrines or just personal relationship with God, but both combined together. The results will be that Jesus continues to be glorified and light will be shown in this city as Mars Hill embodies the one faith.

In a crazy, busy hectic life we all can live in the tension between what seems to matter to us and what really does matter. The question is: how do we judge between what matters and what seems to matter? In Matthew 5 Jesus answers this mammoth question and clears up any ambiguity and confusion we might have in life and tells us why we are here and for whom.

Campus Pastor James Harleman looks at how Moses responds to God’s Calling, Mission, and Presence, examining how it applies to leaders but also every Christian. Jesus calls us to be part of His family and engaged in mission for His Kingdom, even though we are often ignorant, excuse-makers, cowardly and rebellious. He pushes past our excuses and reminds us that He has gone before us and remains present with us every step of the way.
