Jesus preaches in his hometown of Nazareth, but the people reject him. They would rather kill Jesus than kill their religion. He teaches from 1 Kings 17 and 2 Kings 5 to show that even religious people are as needy as a starving pagan widow and that their sin is as horrific as leprosy. We see in this passage at least eight ways we could be compelled to reject Jesus.

Jesus was a world-class, Spirit-filled preacher of Scripture. He traveled throughout the Galilean region, preaching in synagogues. In his hometown of Nazareth, he unrolled and read from the scroll of Isaiah, teaching that he is the fulfillment of Scripture. He takes care of the poor, the captives, the blind, and the oppressed. Jesus is our riches, freedom, sight, and liberation.

This special sermon by Pastor Mark Driscoll aired at all Mars Hill campuses just days after he and a team for Churches Helping Churches returned from a relief and fact-finding trip to Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Pastor Mark shares firsthand stories of pastors and churches there.

Temptation is like bait on a hook. Satan will bait the hook with anything enticing enough to get you to bite, then he will reel you in to death. Jesus was tempted in every way by Satan, but never sinned. Jesus responded by quoting Scripture, that is, the sword of the Spirit, even after Satan tried to turn the sword against him. Pastor Mark shares ten temptation truths to help us resist the bait.

Jesus’ genealogy shows us that God works faithfully from one generation to the next. God redeems messed up families because of his covenantal faithfulness to and love for ill-deserving people. David, Abraham, Noah, and Adam are mentioned in Jesus’ genealogy from Luke. Each points to Jesus, but Jesus is greater than all four. If we are born again in Jesus, we are added to his family line as well.

We live in a world of discipleship where people follow other people for knowledge, fame, power, or lifestyles. We ask the question, “What is true discipleship?” as we consider the call of Jesus to his disciples in Matthew 4:19. True discipleship is responding to the call of Jesus to follow him in his baptism, in his obedience, and in his love for his Father.

In this sermon Pastor Scott Thomas defines despair and examines how even Jesus fought despair by looking closely at Romans 8. He discusses three ways we understand suffering and six promises given to us while we are suffering.

This week we look at encountering God in prayer. Prayer is personal communication with God. But, prayer by itself doesn’t bring us closer to God – only the gospel does that. However, it does make room for it. This week we explore why we struggle with consistently encountering God in prayer and discuss practical relational ways to pray.

In this sermon Pastor Steve starts walks us through the scriptures looking at the subject of temptation. What forms does temptation come in? How do we give into temptation? What is Satan’s purpose in temptation? What is God’s good purpose for believers in trials & temptations? How do we remain strong? How do we resist temptation?

Jesus Christ in Albuquerque: A Special Christmas Eve Sermon

This special Christmas Eve sermon by Pastor Mark Driscoll was recorded especially for the Mars Hill Albuquerque Campus. Pastor Mark frankly addresses the lie of paganism, which confuses the Creator with creation. At Christmastime, spiritual people may give lip service to Jesus without really knowing him. They are in deep darkness, but Jesus Christ, God with us, came as the light of the world.

The crowds that came to John the Baptizer wondered if he was the Christ, but John humbly pointed to Jesus. In the end, Jesus will judge everyone, separating the wheat from the chaff. Though Jesus was sinless, he came down to be baptized by John, and the entire Trinity was present. The Holy Spirit descended like a dove and rested on Jesus; the Father spoke from heaven, to reveal that Jesus is God.

Pastor Mark preaches from the Jordan River, where John the Baptizer baptized many, including Jesus Christ. John preached a baptism of repentance to religious people, whom he called a “brood of vipers.” John urged them to live a life of true repentance instead. Baptism shows that repentance is made possible through Jesus—his life, death, burial, and resurrection.

Pastor Mark Driscoll examines Luke 2, where an angel announces the birth of Jesus, “Christ the Lord,” to shepherds in a field. The angel reveals how we are to see Jesus. We are not to insert him into a false ideology (e.g., atheism, deism, pantheism/panentheism, or theism) that offers no hope, no good news, no savior. Rather, we are to praise Jesus like the angels, Mary, and the shepherds did.
