Currently he serves as a Ministry Coaching International board member, Michael’s passion is to see the people in the pews experience the same life transformation process that one-on-one coaching provides pastors and ministry leaders. This has motivated him to aid in the development of Successful Living, Ministry Coaching International’s intentional discipleship coaching program. He now spends his time coaching and training others and has led to the coaching of many pastors, elders and community group leaders at Mars Hill Church.

Since April, we’ve been in the midst of our “Call to Mission” campaign. The point of this campaign is to see people meet Jesus and be transformed to live for Him. We are calling everyone to join together as gospel partners, striving to see our city changed by the gospel of Christ. Our goal is to see that everyone who calls Mars Hill Church home is growing and bearing fruit for the gospel. We want you to be growing in your relationship with Jesus and helping others do the same. In order for our church to be healthy we need to have a healthy membership and so we are asking for your help in encouraging people towards joining the membership process.

June 1st, we opened up the new member process on the City and officially launched Phase 2 of the Call to Mission campaign. Now, for the first time since the Doctrine series started, people can officially begin their membership process through the City.

Why membership? Why go through the process?
Because membership equals discipleship! We have worked long and hard to recreate our membership process to ensure those that go through it understand three core things; 1) solid Biblical doctrine, 2) what it means to have their identity in Christ and 3) that life is about worshiping Jesus in all facets of it. The membership process is designed to disciple people as they go through it and make sure they are getting connected to community. On the other side of this process each person will have experienced life changing teaching, authentic community and identities directed toward Christ.

The church of Mars Hill is a family, adopted by God (Gal. 4:6-7; Eph. 1:5). From him we receive the privilege to worship Jesus together, serve in his kingdom, and be his children. We care for each other, pray for each other, and serve together. The leadership of Mars Hill Church strives to love and care for its members well (Eph. 4:11-12; Gal. 6:10). In turn, we rely on our members to accomplish our collective work as the church (Eph. 2:10). As an organization, we operate with minimal staff, budget, and programming because we trust the Holy Spirit to move through the transformed hearts of our members, mobilizing the collective body of Christ in humble ways to love the city, love our family, and glorify God on his terms.

The Membership Process
Here’s what it looks like from start to finish:

1. Join The City.

2. Click on the giant blue box that says “Start Your Mars Hill Membership” (or the “Member Process” link underneath your profile picture).

3. Personal background. Confirm the information you provided when you joined The City.

4. Doctrine class. Watch the videos on The City or, if you’ve attended the sermon series, simply check the box. Each video includes two basic comprehension questions.

5. Description of a Disciple’s Life. The Description of a Disciple’s Life section is meant to help you practically apply Christian doctrine to your everyday life.

6. Member Covenant. Mars Hill Church asks all members to enter a covenant relationship with the church-as pastors we commit to serve you, and you commit to serve the church. It’s a relationship that reflects God’s love and care for his people. We desire to serve together as a unified church family.

7. Member Interview. The final step in the membership process is an interview with a Mars Hill leader that you select, most often your community group leader, service team leader or another leader at your campus.

Invite a Friend, Send an Invitation
Maybe you know someone who goes to Mars Hill, but has yet to get involved. Or maybe they’re struggling with particular aspects of Christian belief or the life of the church. Or maybe they’ve been hanging around a long time and just need a close friend to challenge their commitment (with gentleness and respect, of course) to Jesus and his church.

Whatever the case may be, you can help friends get established at Mars Hill by inviting them to join The City. Here’s how:

1. Select Downtown from the ‘My Groups’ menu.

2. Scroll down to the green bar that says ‘Group Participants.’

3. Click the blue link to the lower-right of the bar: ‘invite someone new.’

4. Submit your friends’ email address along with a personal message.

Once the invite is sent, The City administrators will confirm the email address and forward your invitation on within 15 minutes.

Now that the Doctrine series is almost over, help us spread the word about the new membership

On Sunday May 25th Pastor Tim Gaydos preached to the Downtown campus as Pastor Mark Driscoll was out of the pulpit for the week. The break in the current Doctrine sermon series provided a great opportunity to hear a message from Pastor Tim’s heart about the missional call of the Downtown Campus. Additionally the downtown campus had its first baptisms as part of the Sunday Service, including a few spontaneous baptisms!

In his sermon Pastor Tim asked:

“How often do we point to the church as evidence for Christianity and that Jesus rose from the dead?” We usually point to archaeology - prophecy - reliability of Scripture but almost never to the church. In Acts, we see that the evidence for Jesus and Christianity was the church because of their infectious love for one another, generous giving and compassion on their city (Acts 2, 4, 10). Because of that they had favor in Jerusalem and thus, Christianity spread throughout the region. In fact, 2nd Century Roman Emperor Julian, who despised Christianity and ached watching it grow while paganism’s influence shrunk said, “There is nothing that gives rise to the superstition of these Christians then their charity to strangers.”

Our call as missionaries to the core of Seattle is clear, we are to show love, compassion and mercy as Jesus Christ has shown us love, compassion and mercy. When we are told to “love our neighbor as ourself” (Luke 10) we are called to meet human needs with deeds to whomever God places in our path in our sphere of influence. The beautiful thing is that we are not shamed into this…we are called to look in the mirror and see that without Jesus we are spiritually bankrupt, homeless and needy. We’ve been given the riches of heaven.

To hear the sermon in it’s entirety you can download it here as an mp3 or click on the inline player:

Following the sermon at both the morning and evening service several people were baptized to publicly show that they have indeed been given the riches of heaven.

Here is your weekly update for the Mars Hill Church Downtown Campus:

Important and Timely Items:

Dedicate your new kid this coming Sunday at the Mars Hill Downtown campus. Mars Hill does not baptize infants (see the ‘Becoming A Member’ section of the Call To Mission) but we do like to dedicate newborns to the Lord and covenant with parents to shepherd children in a relationship with Christ. If you are interested in participating at this week’s Mother’s Day service baby dedications please email downtown@marshillchurch.org

On a similar note we will be baptizing believers on Sunday May 25th at both the morning and evening services. More info will be forthcoming, but if you are a new believer or have never been baptized please get in touch with us at downtown@marshillchurch.org

A baptism of sorts will occur at the Mars Hill Men’s Advance as Mars Hill’s men are fully immersed into a weekend of teaching about Jesus, His glory and the ever-pressing need to kill our sin. The weekend has been titled “Jesus, Author and Perfecter” and will feature teaching by Pastors Mark Driscoll, Bill Clem, Scott Thomas and Tim Smith. Apparently this is going to be the last all-campus men’s advance, so don’t dilly dally and register now (space is limited)!

Important but not as urgent news:

Whether you are a long time member, new visitor or considering membership you need to get up to speed on the Mission of Mars Hill. The Call to Mission web page is a useful if not mandatory read for anyone wanting to understand the specifics of our mission to bring the Gospel to Seattle and beyond. Do you know what our specific mission statement is? Why does Mars Hill seek to ‘know culture’? And just where is this ‘city within the city’ that we are building? Find all the answers at The Call to Mission.

And speaking of cities and missions, one of your missions should be to join our aptly titled online network ‘The City’. The City is a web based social network for Mars Hill members and visitors that is sort of like Facebook but infinitely better since it actually supplements your community involvement at Mars Hill and keeps you connected with people who might actually fit the real definition of a friend. Plus you cannot ‘poke’ anyone in The City. New users must be invited by current users, so talk to your community group leaders or service leads to get plugged in…or check with the Info Desk in the Commons on Sunday.

For the Christians it will be an opportunity to learn (via prominent business speakers every other month), network with other Christians (business opportunities, synergy, jobs, mentoring, internships, etc), and be missional to the city by inviting our non-Christian friends and colleagues. Cost is $15 at the door which includes a drink ticket and appetizers.
