Jesus The Prophet (Part 16)

Jesus preaches in his hometown of Nazareth, but the people reject him. They would rather kill Jesus than kill their religion. He teaches from 1 Kings 17 and 2 Kings 5 to show that even religious people are as needy as a starving pagan widow and that their sin is as horrific as leprosy. We see in this passage at least eight ways we could be compelled to reject Jesus.

Jesus was a world-class, Spirit-filled preacher of Scripture. He traveled throughout the Galilean region, preaching in synagogues. Jesus is our riches, freedom, sight, and liberation.

Jesus’ genealogy shows us that God works faithfully from one generation to the next. God redeems messed up families because of his covenantal faithfulness to and love for ill-deserving people. David, Abraham, Noah, and Adam are mentioned in Jesus’ genealogy from Luke. Each points to Jesus, but Jesus is greater than all four. If we are born again in Jesus, we are added to his family line as well.

The crowds that came to John the Baptizer wondered if he was the Christ, but John humbly pointed to Jesus. In the end, Jesus will judge everyone, separating the wheat from the chaff. Though Jesus was sinless, he came down to be baptized by John, and the entire Trinity was present. The Holy Spirit descended like a dove and rested on Jesus; the Father spoke from heaven, to reveal that Jesus is God.

Repentance and Baptism (Part 11)

Pastor Mark preaches from the Jordan River, where John the Baptizer baptized many, including Jesus Christ. John preached a baptism of repentance to religious people, whom he called a “brood of vipers.” John urged them to live a life of true repentance instead. Pastor Mark preaches on the southern steps of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. Jesus was first brought up these same steps by his parents to be dedicated in the temple; as a man he taught day after day in the temple. Still, Jesus destroyed the temple because it had become an idol. We do not need the temple today because Jesus has fulfilled all of its functions.

Rather, we are to praise Jesus like the angels, Mary, and the shepherds did.

Mary’s Song (Part 5)

Mary sings a song of praise to God, and in it lists at least 17 attributes of God and echoes a multitude of Old Testament Scriptures—even though she was likely illiterate. From her song, we are encouraged to replace worrying and coveting with worshiping, and replace anxiety with history. Even though Mary has plenty to worry about, she worships God because God has “done great things for [her].”

Mary & Elizabeth (Part 4)

Pregnant Mary visits pregnant Elizabeth so they can be in community together. The baby in Elizabeth’s womb leaps for joy at Mary’s greeting. Elizabeth prophesies that Mary is blessed. Thus, a baby in the womb is indeed a baby and a blessing, and abortion is murder. We all, through sin, have bloody hands, but Jesus died in our place for our sin, and the proper response is faith and worship.

This week we meet Mary, the mother of Jesus. She was a teenager from a small town; a virgin, pledged to be married to Joseph. The angel Gabriel showed up and told Mary that she found favor, or grace, with God. She would conceive and give birth to the Son of God, for nothing is impossible with God. Mary responded in faith, “I am the servant of the Lord,” and thus is our great example of faith.

This week we meet Zechariah, a priest, and his wife, Elizabeth. They were old, barren, and righteous. Zechariah was finally picked to go inside the Temple, and there the angel Gabriel appeared and told him that he would have a son. But Zechariah did not believe, so he was made mute. Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she stayed home, praising God for taking away her reproach or shame.
